Label love: Two Thirds

Two Thirds deserves a big thumbs up. Please read on to find out how this brand will align with all your ethical and sustainable fashion values.

Two thirds of our planet is covered by ocean. Our oceans not only provide us with food, energy and water, but they absorb 30% of the carbon dioxide that we produce, mitigating the effects of climate change.

Spanish born brand Two Thirds is committed to looking after this precious resource. This is immediately apparent with a slogan reading “We are ocean” accompanied by a whale as their logo.

Founded in 2012 by longtime surfer Lutz Schwenke, this ocean loving and inspired brand perfectly combines purpose with style, through their offering of quality and timeless clothing and accessories, in their signature earthy tones.

Supply chain:

Two Thirds has remained committed to its regional roots. Described as a locally made brand, Two Thirds production is carried out in Europe. In doing so, the brand is able to ensure that production facilities are safely regulated under European standards.

  • The raw materials are sourced from the EU, China, or Argentina.

  • Fabrics are produced in Austria, France, Italy, Portugal.

  • Final manufacturing (i.e. cutting and sewing) all take place in Portugal.

Furthermore, local production and distribution (only shipping within the EU) is also a means of minimising the brands carbon footprint.

Materials:

  • Two Thirds incorporates eco-friendly, innovative and high quality materials into their garments and accessories. In their attempt to omit the use of conventional cotton, they utilise GOTS certified organic cotton, hemp, Econyl, tencel, and linen.

  • From an animal welfare perspective, Two Thirds also identifies that they source wool from non-mulesed sheep, and they do not use leather, fur, or animal skins.

  • An overlooked element of design and production are the trims and accessories, however Two Thirds incorporates such things as corozo buttons (a natural material made from the seeds of the corozo palm) to maintain the sustainable integrity of their garments.

Pre-order model:

This is probably one of my favourite features of the brand as I think we all could learn a lot as consumers from engaging in the pre-order model (me included). The Two Thirds pre-order system counteracts the fast fashion model. While the brand releases collections early, they only produce what they sell. This model is more sustainable as supply meets demand, ultimately minimising textile waste. As I have mentioned in a previous post 'Patience is a virtue', this model could be part of the answer to pre-emptively slow down, and shift consumer mindsets and behaviours. Clothes should, and do take time to produce. They are worth the wait.

Packaging:

I can personally vouch for the way in which Two Thirds items are delivered. As expected, there is no plastic in sight, with your items coming beautifully packaged in paper bags, and a recycled cardboard box.

Please get in touch or leave me a comment. I would love to know what your ethical and sustainable brand recommendations are.

Thanks for reading.
